Abstract
The treatment of advanced cancer of the maxillary sinus often requires extensive ablation and orbital exenteration that results in large full thickness defects of the upper cheek and orbital regions. Reconstruction of large orbital-maxillary
defects can
be accomplished in one stage using microsurgical free transfer of latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flaps. The muscle compartment is suitable to fill the orbital and maxillary cavities and skin compartments are used for cheek, palate and lateral
nasal
wall
as a three-dimensional folded free flap. We have experienced two cases of latissimus dorsi free flap for the reconstruction of surgical defect developed after radical maxillectomy with orbital exenteration. Both of the two patients were satisfied
and
there have been no complications associated with this technique. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:6, 1995)
